My thoughts as an artist
The artist, Eva Hoven.
I was born in Norway and have been living in different countries along the way, including 9 years in Houston. I believe living in different parts of the world makes it easier for me to compare the different societies I have been living in. As an educated medical nurse, I’m throughly engaged in the well being of the human race. I’m trying to show this in my art work. In combination with colors, patterns and symbols, a single word can be very powerful and full of meaning. It can even give a different emotion from one person to another. This is what I search for in my pieces, to tell a story that awakens emotions and creates a dialog.
I have lately been working on 8 larger pieces, finding inspiration in what’s going on around us in society. Challenging subjects like homelessness, the veteran’s situation, school shootings, the conflict on the border between The US and Mexico, climate changes and the changes in the political climate in the US
After being an artist for almost 20 years, I now got my art certificate at Glassell school of art, MFAH where I got my major in painting, spring 2020. I have had my studio at Sawyer Yards for several years, but will now focus on being an art student for an other year and study ceramics.
In parallel with my narratives, I have also been working with oil sticks. I find it very intriguing and fulfilling, by trying to reflect certain emotions, seasons and happenings in life. The inspiration for a series I have worked on, has been how life works by constantly giving us more experience to use for our judgements and actions. I’m illustrating this by adding layers of lines and marks that are then almost covered, but still there. I’m expressing that the experience and knowledge that we collect throughout life will remain in our sub-consciousness and will most likely be expressed in our behavior. The behavior is illustrated by a collaboration of marks in different colors with a more intense color scheme on top of all the underlaying line
When corona hit, it took us all by surprise. I ended up in my mother country, Norway, where the corona situation was controlled decently. My family and I were able to enjoy the forest and nature in a unique way. I have been able to use months studying nature and its structure to use as inspiration for my ceramic vessels and paintings.
I have been given the opportunity to show my latest work at H Haavik Rammer og Kunst located in my hometown, Kristiansand. It will hang the whole of January 2021.
I have chosen to call my exhibition "en vandring" translated, a journey. This because I find the word journey contains a lot symbolic meaning. To move from one place to an other over time, gives opportunities for reflection and change. A journey can continue over time.
In nature there are so many different structures to be find. They can evolve on rocks, leaves, stems, mountain surface, basically nature is structure all over. This structure has been made over time. The weather and all of natures elements have their journey over natures surfaces and makes their own art work. It is this structure that fascinates me the most these days. It is constantly changing and unique from place to place. It is on my journey in the forest that I find my inspiration for my ceramic vessels and my paintings.
I find this natural process of layering that becomes the most beautiful artwork made by nature it self very inspiring and its a process that I try to take with me in life as a reminder that life is in a constant change, and still beautiful with it's countless layers. I'm choosing to interpret this layers as life experience. A natural parallel to Natures structural wonders will be the humans that is given birth and then in time grow old. We get more wisdom and beauty as time goes by. I love the word: to embrace. We should embrace our age.
I find so beautiful and mindful lines that have been made over time. Structures in Nature or marks on a dining table tells us something about our history. We are constantly on a changing and with change there will be development. My results of my journy will be posted on my website in a week from now.
